The staff was very fast and kind. The food was really good. Spice level 1 is a little hot though... only confusing thing was beef you have to order at the end. Overall the place is great!
Pixiu Mala Hongtang PDX offers a unique dining experience, kind of like a Chipotle-style hot pot. The concept is really fun. You choose your ingredients, and then you can pick between two options: soup style or stir-fried. My friend had the soup and it wasn't great, so we went with stir-fried, and it didn't disappoint. I chose the 1.5 spicy level, but honestly, it wasn't very spicy. I think I might've gone a bit too mild for my first time. The service was great, our server was friendly, and when we were waiting for our other friends, she came over to make sure we knew how to order. The ambience was a bit bare-bones, with a simple setup that doesn't have much of a decor, but it's still comfortable for a casual meal. As for pricing, I think it's based on weight. My meal ended up being $33, which is a bit expensive. I think next time I will dial back on the ingredients a bit.
So checked this place out on a recommendation. Basically make your own soup or stir fry dish. You grab a bowl and add the ingredients (charged by weight). You can choose soup or stir fry and select the spice level. So simple but huge selection of ingredients (noodle types, veggies, protein). Some things you dont see often at hot pot. I think I'll try the stir fry next time!
Highly Recommend this place if you're craving for some Malatang! Winter weather broth hits the spot and you can adjust your spice level from mild to extra spicy! The stir fry version is also amazing if you don't feel like having soup. Mix it up with SoMaek, straight up SoJu or Terra and you're good to go! Staff were super friendly and helpful as it was our first time dining there. Walked us thru the process and checked on us as we enjoyed our meal. You can enjoy it solo, on a Friday night date, or casual group of friends or family!
The ladies working were really nice. I like how we get to choose our own ingredients, note you need a $17 spend minimum for stir fry and $15 minimum for soup, which is based on the weight of the ingredients. The soup tastes peanut based. As someone who likes spicy, I got my stir fry level 2 spice and it was perfect. Only deducting 1 star for how expensive it is. This plate was pretty small. I was content but not full and it was $20
Not too bad !! It near our hotel and we are starving , since you can pick whatever veggies at the self serve bar , I guess we should self control a little bit more...... we only try the spicy level one , I can't really tell how spicy other level will be , at least level one is doable nit too overwhelming, their service is in the spot , overall is a good place
Soup and spicy (or mild) lovers unite! I was surprised to find this spot tucked around the corner from NW 23rd. I often find myself meandering the area to scout new bites to try and was not expecting to find this Korean-Chinese customizable soup/stir fry spot! There's a self-serve bar of veggies, seafood, and different noodles where you can choose which toppings/add-ins you want into your malatang (soup) or mala xiangguo (stir fry). You also customize which spice level you would like your dish at (scale of 0-5) and my sister who is big spice lovers got a level 2 and was satisfied spice wise already! I personally got a level of 1, and it was perfect for me (I can chug a full water bottle while eating hot Cheetos lol). After the self-serve bar you weigh your bowl and can choose whether or not you also want to add pork or beef in your dish) The staff are so polite and help guide you through the ordering process, on top of any appetizers (a la carte) items that you can add to your meal! I also love the fact that they have a private lot (only 4 spots I believe, but in this area- that's gold!)
I have come here so many time since opening and it is a favorite. There's no place in Portland that does it quite like them, and they do malatang VERY well. After walking in and being directed to your table, you're free to get up and make your way to the selection bar to decide what items you want in either a soup base or a stir-fry. I always like the switch it up, but I love how their bar area is always kept so clean and the items are always very fresh (veggies are washed well!). I honestly prefer the spicy stir fry but even their no spice (and you can get it with spice if you want) soup broth, it is so comforting and delicious. I cannot spread how good this place is nor how kind and accommodating the staff is; you have to go check it out yourself! Plus! There's al carte items that, while I have not yet tried, look so delicious, as well as a sauce bar!
I was on my way to a dumpling house in the neighborhood but after 7 minutes of searching for parking in the pouring rain, I gave up. Fate put me in front of this Korean specialty place and it had a parking lot! so I stopped. This used to be a sushi joint, one more in a long line of okay sushi spots in Portland but it is now a sleek, clean, Korean soup kitchen. Sort of like a Mongolian grill but so much better. You choose the things you want from a long line of familiar, and some less (unless you are an aficionado of Korean cuisine, perhaps) and place them in a stainless steel bowl using clean stainless tongs I chose bok choy, bean sprouts, black mushroom, bitter melon, long bean, spinach, parsley, bamboo shoot and a couple of veggies I don't know the name of. I added extremely fresh raw large shrimp for my protein from an array of things I can only guess at, though I recognized squid, bacon rolls, pork balls, and tofu. You can then ask the chef to add pork belly, lamb, or beef if you want. i did not. They weigh it and take it away. I chose stir fry instead of soup because i'd been eating homemade soup for two days. It was returned to my table piping hot by a smiling, friendly young Korean woman, seasoned beautifully with sesame oul, chilis, garlic, perhaps a splash of cooking wine, and seasoned peanuts. Delicious. A man across the way from me went with the soup version and slurped happily away at his bowl. Korean pop music played at a reasonable volume, upbeat. It was not inexpensive. My stir fry lunch set me back $22. But it was definitely fresh, tasty, and its unlike any place else in Portland I know of.
